In Massachusetts, the grounds for divorce listed in state law (M.G.L. c. 207§1, 2) include adultery, domestic neglect, severe confirmed drug or alcohol addiction, cruel and abusive treatment, lack of support, sexual dysfunction, and a prison sentence of more than 5 years. You may file a divorce on any of these grounds, and the petitioner must be able to prove these grounds. If the judge finds that there are no grounds for divorce, the divorce will not be granted. Fault divorces are complicated and time-consuming, so in many cases, no-fault divorces are preferred.
